Rosmarinus officinalis, commonly known as rosemary, is undoubtedly an irreplaceable spice in the kitchen. It is native to the Mediterranean region, but is now grown worldwide as a spice and medicinal herb.
It can grow to 2 meters, has needle-like leaves and white, pink, purple or blue flowers. The plant thrives best in a warm sunny climate and belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae).
But, besides for seasoning, rosemary can be used as an herb for healing as well – the small leaves of the plant have very beneficial properties. It is well known that the flavorful herb protects the brain from Alzheimer’s, stroke and neurological disorders.
The herb can slow down the aging of the brain, show results from studies carried out in universities in the US and Japan. Rosemary contains a compound called carnosic acid – it shields the brain against the effects of free radicals.
Carnosic acid is activated by the damage done by free radicals in the tissue itself. Aside from that, the herb contains the phytochemical beta-caryophyllene, which protects the body from inflammation and can be used in problems with the arteries, show results from studies done by German and Swiss scientists.
Rosemary is a miraculous herb, which is why aromatherapy experts advise us to use it regularly in the kitchen and to drink flavorful tea made from it often. It is also recommended to get a massage using rosemary oil every night before bed – rub the forehead carefully without applying too much pressure.
Rosemary also improves concentration and memory. The flavorful herb can be applied topically – in the form of baths. They will significantly decrease the pain caused by the dislocation of joints, and also soothe the unpleasant disorders in rheumatism.
If you want to make a rosemary bath, you will need the following ingredients – 5 tablespoons of the herb, 4 1/5 cups water and 1 tablespoon olive oil. Put everything into a suitable pot on the stove and once it comes to a boil, remove it and let it brew for about 20 min.
Finally, once completely cooled, strain and pour the infusion in the remaining water in the bathtub. It is not recommended to take this bath before sleep, since it is possible for it to have a stimulating effect.
